Big Question

As I stand, sit, lay, breathe, I ask myself how am I alive? What is life? Is it some spark of energy that causes atoms in molecules in parts of a cell to work together to perceive life? Why is is that you can destroy a human being into every individual atom but you can't put everything back together and create life again? What causes this spark to suddenly stop existing in a body causing a person to be pronounced dead? Everyday we are surrounded by life yet we still haven't been able to recognize what life is in essence.

Essay #1

A cliche is "home is where the heart is", now what the cliche doesn't explain is how the heart reacts to being separated from the home. "The poisonwood bible" by Barbara Kingsolver shows us how a family is cut away from there home and how this exile has both alienated them and enriched them. The character Adah, one of the twin sisters, experiences this in the novel through the conflicts she has with the village, her personal illness, and her father's actions.
In the story we see how the Price family has many conflicts with the village. The way that they don't respect the culture of the people, and are forcing the villagers to accept and be a part of their religion, causes the villagers to be hostile toward the Price family. Nathan Price offended the village by rejecting there nudity culture, not accepting help and believing that the villagers were below him and that he knew more, and lastly by forcing his religion on to the people and not giving up his ideas, even becoming aggressive and rude. because of the family's bad reputation, Adah isn't very liked by the town, They are even happy when they find out she was attacked by a lion. Her relationship with the village later helps her realize the error in the actions of her father and the family with the village.
Adah's illness which causes paralysis in half her body causes her to act like she is helpless. She can probably still move but her embarrassment keeps her from even attempting it. When the village was invaded by flesh eating ants, she refused to evacuate because nobody would carry her. This shows us just how callow and helpless she acted and felt. After the events of the story we see how she has grown and aimed to help herself instead of getting help from others.
Nathan's actions in the novel serve as the catalyst for Adah's growth and realization. As he keeps getting rejected by the village Adah realizes that it is wrong for him to force his religion on to the village. then when Nathan kidnaps the children to baptize them and accidentally gets them killed, she realizes that what her family was doing wrong was not respecting the village and their culture, as well as getting too involved. She also stops feeling so sorry for herself after understanding the lifestyle of the village people. She later goes on to study medicine. After she becomes a doctor she changes her study to epidemiology because of her respect for bacteria and viruses.
Through her relationship with the village, her own medical problems and her father's actions Adah turned her exile to the Congo into a learning and growing experience. She realizes the importance in respect which we can see at the end of the book with the way she respects the bacteria and viruses and chooses to study them.  She also grows in maturity and becomes more independent by curing herself with what she studied in medical school. Adah is the epitome of growth cause by exile from the home as well as having to suffer hardships.
